Coys 'Spirit of Motoring' at Ascot, 21 April 2012: Preview
1964 Aston Martin DB5: £270,000 - 300,000

They’re off! Yes, the spring auction season has started and first out of the starting-gate this month is Coys with a 54-car entry to its Ascot racecourse auction.

In a sale catering for every taste (there are several classic tractors, as well as a vintage Dennis fire engine and a brilliant Renault Estafette 'Gordini' Campervan historic race support vehicle), the headlining entry must surely be the 1964 Aston Martin DB5.

Carrying an estimate of £270,000 - 300,000, the Dubonnet Rosso DB5 is catalogued as “a magnificent motor car which drives, handles and stops exactly as it should”. DB5s aren’t offered for sale so often nowadays. So, with owners preferring to see which way the market goes, potential buyers should have a look at this one

There’s one other Aston in the sale: a 1988 Series V Oscar India V8 for £58,000 - 68,000.

1974 Ferrari 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer: £95,000 - 110,000

Ferrari enthusiasts will appreciate the £95,000 - 110,000, 1974 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer, and would be unwise to disregard the 1991 Testarossa, competitively estimated at £35,000 - 45,000. Yes, it’s Rosso Corsa with Crema hide, but, just think: a twelve-cylinder, range-topping Ferrari supercar for the price of a well-specced C Class? Come on, avanti!, down to Ascot with you.

1961 Jaguar E-type Series I Flat Floor FHC: £55,000 - 65,000

If something with greater discretion is more your style, then how about the grey 1961 Jaguar E-type S1 ‘Flat Floor’ FHC (£55,000 - 65,000), or the LHD Old English White 1954 Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster for £39,000 - 45,000?

Pre-War cars are represented by some attractive entries such as the 1939 Bentley 4¼ Litre MX Sports Saloon by Park Ward, ‘Refer Dept.’ for price on this one, and the 1937 Jaguar SS100 2½ Litre (£165,000 - 185,000).

There’s also a 1938 Morgan 4/4 Flat Radiator at £11,000 - 13,000, a nice entry-level just pre-War roadster for the summer.

1937 Jaguar SS100 2½ Litre: £165,000 - 185,000 1953 Bentley R-Type Convertible, Coachwork by Park Ward: £58,000 - 65,000

Ah, the summer. Open-air aficionados can choose from no fewer than four Mercedes SLs, one ‘Pagoda’ and a trio of 190 SLs, the car for so long overlooked in a range that included the now stratospherically priced 300 SL Roadster. Perusing the catalogue, my tip on these entries would be the 1957 black-with-cream-hide example, a LHD car complete with its all-important hard-top. Estimate: £42,000 - 50,000.

Auction: Saturday 21 April 2012.
Location: Ascot Racecourse, Ascot, Berkshire SL5 7JX
