Silverstone Auctions ‘The Walter Hayes Sale’, 4 November 2011: Preview

1973 BMW 3.0 CSL: 'No Reserve'

Held the day before Britain’s annual ‘Bonfire Night’ celebration, the final 2011 Silverstone Auctions event offers 80 cars and a fine selection of automobilia, all at the ‘Home of British Motor Racing’.

The sale takes its title from the associated end-of-year racing festival at the famous Northamptonshire Grand Prix track - Walter Hayes being the famous Ford PR man responsible for the American company’s extensive racing programme in the 1960s. Naturally enough, several competition cars are catalogued, with the 1961 Morgan Plus 4 (Le Mans class winner in 1962, £125,000 - 165,000) a highlight.

There are also some ‘fun’ historic racing cars including three Ford Anglias (1963 105E FIA Race Car, £35,000 - 40,000; 1965 Superspeed 1650, £35,000 - 40,000; 1965 Superspeed Replica Race Car, £30,000 - 36,000) and a 1963 Deep Sanderson DS 105 ‘Twinny’. The latter, at ‘No Reserve’, is one of the fearsome twin-engined cars developed by the legendary British racing driver/engineer Chris Lawrence.

1961 Morgan Plus 4, 1962 Le Mans class winner: £125,000 - 165,000

The sale also includes, directly from the estate of the late Chris Lawrence, his personal ‘Monica’, the Franco-British marque developed in the 1970s as a latter day reprise of the Facel Vega: an elegant two-door, four-seater, powered by a large-capacity American V8. ‘No Reserve’ for this one.

Elsewhere in the catalogue, Silverstone Auctions MD Nick Whale’s expertise in the field of Ferrari, Porsche and BMW comes to the fore with many of the other entries. There’s a brace of 1970s ‘CS’ BMWs (a 1972 3.0 CSA at £8500 - 10,500 and a ‘No Reserve’ 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL) plus a 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport (£50,000 - 60,000) and a 1991 Ferrari Testarossa (£55,000 - 65,000), surely the most affordable, 12-cylinder, 180mph Ferrari sub-£100k?

1972 Lamborghini Espada S2 400GT: £29,000 - 36,000 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Saloon: £9000 - 12,000

Other cars of interest include the highly rated 2007 Proteus C-Type (LHD, alloy-bodied and £60,000 - 70,000), the elegant 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190SL (£40,000 - 50,000, pale metallic blue and looking rather nice) and a 1960 Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato 2.5L 3C (£100,000 - 125,000).

1975 Yamaha DT250 Enduro: £3000 - 3800 1962 Jaguar E-type Series I FHC: £28,000 - 35,000

And don’t forget the motorcycles, three are listed and include a 1975 Yamaha DT250 Enduro for £3000 - 3800. Prior to the motor cars and motorcycles, an automobilia sale will be conducted which features such gems as a 1931 Monte Carlo Rally Trophy (hallmarked silver, by Mappin and Webb, £800 – 1200).

The sale will take place on Friday, 4 November (with viewing on 3 November 2011) - automobilia 14:00, motor cars 16:00.

1962 Mercedes-Benz 190SL: £40,000 - 50,000
