H&H at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, 21 September 2011: Preview

LHD, 1975 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer: £110,000 - 130,000

Always a popular venue, Europe’s finest museum of fighting aeroplanes once again plays host to Cheshire-based H&H, which has assembled an 84-car, quality catalogue including two exciting collections (previewed recently in Classic Driver) and interesting cars from Aston Martin, Jaguar, Austin-Healey and Ferrari, as well as an ex-Paul McCartney, 1964 Aston Martin DB5, the final lot in the sale.

There are four other Astons in the Duxford sale. In addition to the 'Refer Dept.' DB5, there are two 5-speed, 1970 Mk 2 DB6s (a converted-from-fuel-injection car requiring a little TLC at £50,000 - 65,000, and a clearly well-sorted example for £120,000 - 140,000 with extensive history from all the right specialists), a 1953 DB2 Saloon at £85,000 - 100,000 and a 1937 2 Litre 15/98 Four-Seater Tourer for £65,000 - 75,000.

Elsewhere in the catalogue, buyers looking for a broad spread of classics will not be disappointed, with entries ranging from a ‘No Reserve’, 1965 Triumph TR4A to a ‘no expense spared’, totally restored 1953 Jaguar XK120 SE Fixed Head Coupé (£120,000 - 140,000) first owned by the 1950s Jaguar racing driver Peter Whitehead. In Suede Green with matching hide interior, a lovely car.

As is – with a full restoration – the 1955 Alfa Romeo 1900 SS. Estimated at £60,000 - 70,000, the car has been raced in historic events but could either be race-prepped to modern standards, or perhaps converted back to a road car. Of a similar vintage are the 1954 Austin-Healey 100 (£25,000 - 28,000) and the 1956 MG A 1500 Roadster (£19,000 - 21,000) – good, honest classics, both.

It’s not all real ale, Spitfires and country pub fare, though, as other cars to be offered on 21 September include six Ferraris, numbering an example of each of the Maranello company’s 1970s iconic supercars: a 1972 Dino 246 GT for £100,000 - 120,000; a 1973 365 GTB/4 ‘Daytona’, £150,000 - 180,000; and a LHD 1975 365 GT4 BB for £110,000 - 130,000.

Whether the distinctive, ‘rubber bumper’ 1971 365 GTC/4 can yet be considered ‘iconic’ is best left to post-dinner reflection and a good bottle of Barolo, but £45,000 - 55,000 for this RHD, Silver Blue (with original Tobacco hide/Zegna cloth interior) example seems reasonable to me.

Historic road/rally enthusiasts will appreciate the 1971 BMW 2800 CS (£30,000 - 35,000), while those preferring much faster, single-seater action would do well to look at the £40,000 - 45,000, 1963 Brabham BT6 Formula Junior racer.

H&H’s Simon Hope likes his Lagondas, the company has always sold them well, and the forthcoming Duxford sale lists two: a 1932 2 Litre Low Chassis Continental, at £75,000 - 85,000, and a 1933 Lagonda 16/80 Tourer for £55,000 - 65,000.

One of the headlining lots is the pre-War 1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K Cabriolet C, a car from The Valencia Collection. It’s ‘Refer Dept.’ for price, and is understood to have been first registered in Britain, to a Lt. Colonel Stancomb (since then, it has spent much of its life in the USA before current ownership in Spain).

Only a few years later, of course, and the officer classes would never have chosen a German car, preferring something understated and British.

Harold Radford’s bespoke Bentley conversions certainly fit the bill, and 'The Sportsman's Ideal Touring Saloon' – as they were advertised – in the form of Lot 37, the 1951 Bentley MK VI Radford Countryman, would have been the ideal conveyance for a freshly de-commissioned Lieutenant Colonel.

Nowadays, the estimate of £80,000 - 100,000 might need more than a good dividend from Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd, but it’s still the Right Sort of Car for the Right Sort of Chap.

Also on 21 September, H&H will be offering 44 motorcycles including a 1959 Norton Manx 30M (£28,000 - 32,000) as well as an extensive automobilia selection that includes watches, books, signs and paintings.
