Six prototypes from the Bertone Museum are the latest entries in RM’s inaugural sale at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, on 21 May.
The Museum – now in the hands of liquidators – has been the repository for some of the great Italian styling house’s most well-known projects. Six examples have been selected for inclusion in the Ontario-based auction house’s ‘by invitation only’ event, to be held on the weekend of the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este.
A fitting location, surely, for cars such as the 1967 Lamborghini Marzal prototype (1,000,000 - 1,800,000 euros) driven by Prince Rainier and Princess Grace at the start of the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix. There are two other Lamborghinis, the 1974 Bravo, a wedge-shaped supercar with a hint of 308 GT4 Ferrari meeting Countach, for 150,000 – 220,000 euros and a 1980 Athon. The 150,000 – 220,000 euros Athon is a space-age roadster, seemingly fresh from the set of ‘Star Wars’.
In addition to the Marzal, one of the main Collection cars is the first prototype of the mid-engined Lancia Stratos production supercar. Carrying an estimate of 1,000,000 – 1,800,000 euros, the 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero is another super-futuristic design, resplendent in metallic bronze paintwork.
The other Lancia, a 1978 Sibilo described as ‘outlandish' in RM’s press material, was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in April 1978. It’s estimated at 60,000 - 100,000 euros.
Finally, just for something a little different and non-Italian, there’s a 1963 Chevrolet Testudo (‘tortoise’ in Italian) that carries a one-off, transparent one-piece windscreen and roof cover. Hence the name, one assumes. 500,000 - 800,000 euros will buy it, so RM states.
The auction will be held on 21 May, 2011 at 20:00, at the Spazio Villa Erba, Largo Luchino Visconti 4, Cernobbio, Como 22012, Italy.
