Reported in Michael Hay's book Bentley: The Vintage Years 1919-1931 as "last heard of in 1964", 1924 Bentley 3-Litre 'Red Label' Speed Model - $275,000 - 325,000
The Larz Anderson Auto Museum, Brookline, MA will be the location for Bonhams’ next US sale. One of the highlights is 'a remarkable discovery', this 1924 Bentley 3-Litre 'Red Label' Speed Model.
The car, estimated at $275,000 - 325,000, benefits from the shorter (117in vs. 120in) chassis and more powerful engine of the ‘Speed’ series cars, as well as carrying three-door sporting bodywork by Vanden Plas. It was first supplied in late 1924 (finished in blue and black) to J. Kennedy of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. Still in UK ownership in the 50s, it was sold to the USA in 1963, changing hands only a couple of times before arriving at the still-Stateside vendor’s garage.

Bonhams & Butterfields displayed the car at this year’s Quail Lodge where it generated considerable interest. It runs and is catalogued as ‘certainly usable as it is’, with the delightful patina so loved by many members of the Vintage crowd.
As these cars are so popular now, and eligible for all the right events, there won’t be many more cars found in such an original, unmolested condition.
1932 Ford Roadster Hot Rod (a rare, Canadian-built Hot Rod first modified in 1953) - $85,000 - 100,000
1934 Ford Deluxe Model 40 'Woodie' Station Wagon - $40,000 - 50,000
A significant proportion of the rest of the sale is given over to a collection of pre-War Fords that includes some absolute gems; cars such as the ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ 1932 Ford Model B Deluxe Roadster ($100,000 - 135,000).
It may look unmodified and relatively innocent from the outside, but beneath the beautifully finished bodywork and high quality interior sits an extensively modified Model B engine, one of ten built by Robert McKinney. The R.E.M. Engineering twin-overhead cam unit, serial number 001, is inspired by a similar Offenhauser set-up and will give exhilarating performance.
1932 Ford Model B Deluxe Roadster - $100,000 - 135,000
There’s also a superb 1932 Ford Model B V-8 Deluxe Roadster ($90,000 - 110,000) and another ‘32 Ford’, a rare Canadian-built Hot Rod first modified in 1953. Extensively raced in period, the Candy Apple Red roadster has been restored in recent years and carries an estimate of $85,000 - 100,000. For those favouring a more gentle life, and perhaps considering a little mild restoration, the collection also includes a fine 1934 Ford Deluxe Model 40 ‘Woodie’ Station Wagon ($40,000 - 50,000) in very original condition.
1937 AC 16/80 Competition Model Sports Two Seater - $160,000 - 200,000
Elsewhere in the predominantly pre-War catalogue, mention must be made of the 1937 AC 16/80 Competition Model Sports Two Seater, a car from the Estate of the late John J. Dalessando, carrying an estimate of $160,000 - 200,000. These are elegantly designed two-seaters for the discerning sportsman – or woman, as the car was first delivered to Miss Hope Edwards of Netley Hall, Shrewsbury, UK.
1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom/Hispano-Suiza aero-engined Special Speedster - $140,000 - 180,000
Miller Tribute, c.1932 Miller Wilbur Shaw Special - $100,000 - 125,000
Moving more up-to-date, there is a selection of quality, home-grown big-capacity ‘metal’ in the form of the 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Fastback Coupe Q-Code 427 (a 4-speed manual for $55,000 - 65,000), a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible L71 435bhp Turbojet ($110,000 - 125,000) and a 26,000 miles, with one former owner from new, 1954 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster with Hard Top ($65,000 - 75,000).
Prior to the motor cars, Bonhams & Butterfields will sell 400 lots of automobilia including many rare wheels, and engine and trim parts from pre-War American cars. There’s also a Ferrari F40 owner's manual, estimated at $300 – 400.
