Celebrating 10 years of motor car and automobilia sales at Quail Lodge, Bonhams achieved nearly $9 million in total sales, the lack of several ‘big-ticket’ cars in comparison to other houses leading to a comparatively lower overall total. One of the higher sellers was this 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Touring formerly in the collection of the late LA Times publisher Otis Chandler, selling for $271,000.
The collection of ‘without reserve’ muscle cars from a private Oregonian collection garnered a total of $2.1m, the most expensive car being the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Coupe $254,500, originally estimated at $125,000 – 150,000.

With entries like the 1952 Allard-Chrysler/Cadillac J2X and the 1929 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Sedan (estimated at $850,000 – 950,000) non-sellers, it was down to two older cars to tie for the highest slot, both the brass era 1907 Packard Model 30 U-series Runabout and the 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Regent Convertible Coupé selling for $403,000. Also amongst the ‘earlies’ was the world’s oldest known Cadillac, a 1903 Runabout, moving on to a private US buyer who paid $337,000 (including buyer’s premium, as all our prices do).
Of more interest to sporting Classic Driver readers will be the 1961 Cooper-Climax Type 61 'Monaco' selling for $262,200, the 1975 Lancia Stratos for $131,300, and the 1968 Lotus-Ford 47 GT Group 4 for $107,640.

The alloy-bodied ex-Walter Hill 1950 Jaguar XK120 Competition Roadster found a new owner at $205,000, while also on the Coventry marque front please note the $139,000 paid for the 1963 Jaguar XKE 3.8-Liter Series I Roadster. This catalogued superbly and clearly represented a fantastic opportunity to buy a beautifully rebuilt LHD E-Type in ‘as-new’ condition proving the old maxim – let someone else spend the money on restoration.
Prior to the Motor Cars an extensive selection of Automobilia was auctioned including an original movie poster autographed by Steve McQueen, Robert Duvall, Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Vaughn for the Oscar-winning film Bullitt that sold for $14,040 (Estimate $250 – 350)
