With an entry that has stabilised to around 50 motor cars, Bonhams' Revival sale has become an important part of the wonderful period event, housed at is in a marquee just outside the main entrance. One of the entries is The Property of Jackie Oliver, Esq, a 2005 Ford GT Coupé estimated at £120,000 - 140,000.
Oliver of course co-drove a Ford GT40 in 1969 for the JW Gulf team with the famous Belgian Jacky Ickx, the two winning the closest-ever Le Mans 24 Hours in that year. A grand prix driver too, the Londoner was a member of Gold Leaf Team Lotus and later founded the Arrows Formula 1 équipe. Still a very fast driver, he’s been a regular feature at the Revival and the winning bidder of the auction of his road car of recent times will not only own a genuine ‘European’ Ford GT but also receive a selection of ‘Oliver automobilia’ that includes a pair of his actual Gulf overalls and a copy of his JWA contract for the 1969 season.

The big money in the sale is in a selection of pre-War cars that includes a 1929 Isotta-Fraschini Tipo 8A 7.4 litre Sport Landaulette for £200,000 - 250,000, a 1927 Bentley 6½-Litre All-Weather Tourer at £270,000 - 300,000, and another Bentley, a 1928 4½-Litre Tourer [below] estimated at £110,000 - 130,000.
There’s also a ‘one-off’, the Bentley R-type 4½-litre Special Roadster resplendent in two-tone brown, a car commissioned in the ‘70s or ‘80s by the motoring journalist and peer of the realm David Strathcarron in the manner of pre-War Gurney Nutting designs. £35,000 - 45,000 is the estimate, and you are unlikely to meet another one in the street.
Goodwood being Goodwood, the catalogue is sprinkled with a fair proportion of racing machinery. There’s a 1972 Abarth-Osella 2000 Sport (that will need total re-commissioning) at £65,000 - 75,000, an apparently ‘historic-race-ready’ 1956 Lotus XI Le Mans Series I Climax for £75,000 - 85,000, and one of the highlights of the sale, a genuine ex-Works ‘Monte’ Mini, ‘GRX 5D’ the 1967 Circuit of Ireland-winning car in the hands of Paddy Hopkirk.
It’s estimated at £70,000 - 80,000 and was one of the cars disqualified during the notorious 1966 Monte Carlo Rally.

Two racing cars in the sale have close Goodwood connections. One of them, the ex-Ace Garage Rotherham / C.T. ‘Tommy’ Atkins, Trevor Taylor/Roy Salvadori, 1959 Beart Cooper-Climax Type 45/51 Formula 2 car (£40,000 - 45,000) is reasonably priced and has done many a Goodwood meeting in-period, driven by Salvadori, whose life is spotlighted at this year’s Revival, while the 1959 Lola-Climax Mark I Sports-Racing Two-Seater (£90,000 - 110,000) is being sold on behalf of no lesser a personage than Lord March himself.

The Motor Car sale is preceded by a truly superb selection of Automobilia including items from the Geoffrey Goddard Collection (Part II), and itself includes a glorious Hispano-Suiza-engined Racing Hydroplane at £60,000 - 70,000, the 1914 British International Trophy Motorboat Racing Championship Contender, named Batboat III.
The Sale takes place at the Goodwood Revival on Friday 31 August 2007, at 5.00 pm precisely.
