BMW Concept CS – Shanghai Surprise!

BMW is presenting a completely new styling project at the 2007 Shanghai motor show. Titled the Concept CS, the new car will probably make production as a super-expensive rival to the Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera rather than Mercedes' popular CLS. No engine specifications have yet been announced, although the worldwide motoring press - ever in thrall to M-powered BMWs - is speculating that a V12 version of the current M5's ten-cylinder will be under the bonnet.

It's a big old thing. Measuring 5.10 metres in length, and 2.2 metres wide (yet just 1.36 metres high), the styling comes from the Bangle school of design, yet introduces some more mellow features and - despite its size - is probably one of the better-balanced versions of the much-criticised 'flame' cars yet. The side view has hints of BMW coupes past, while the front and rear treatments are 6- meets 7-Series.

The car is a full four-seater, with a decidedly sporting leaning, and you can be sure that the Bavarian company will be throwing every technical trick in the book at it, with state-of-the-art electronics and driver aids.
