The Donald Healey Motor Works were founded by Donald Healey in 1946. The factory was situated in Warwick where all models were produced from 1946 until 1954. Donald had an illustrious competition and engineering career before setting up his own company, and all of this extensive experience was bought to bear in all the cars which carried his name. Several models were produced, all using the same chassis, which were then clothed in aluminium saloon, drophead coupé and sports bodies. Running gear in the majority of models was taken care of by Riley Components including the excellent twin-cam 2.5 litre engine. The only exceptions to this were the Nash and Alvis Sports Special models. The Silverstone was made between 1948 and 1950 with one hundred and six being produced in D and E type chassis. The cigar shaped aluminium body was very much based upon the pre-World War II single seat racing cars, and incorporated some quite unique features, possibly the most unique was the spare wheel being placed in a slot in the rear of the body to act as a rear bumper, and the front windscreen which could be lowered into the front scuttle to aid aerodynamics.

This particular Healey Silverstone has been created from a Tickford sports saloon. It was built and registered in 1989 using the shortened Tickford chassis, the correct Riley twin-cam 2.5 litre engine, four speed gearbox and 4.2 ratio back axle. The chassis and running gear were then dressed in a glass fibre body which was made from moulds taken from D32. Since its completion in 1989, SSU 183 has been owned by possibly the most well-known Silverstone historian and racer, Chris Berens. SSU 183 was in Mr Berens ownership from late January 1993 until the mid to late 1990s, at the same time as owning SSU 183, Chris also owned and raced the genuine Silverstone D51. SSU 183 was initially purchased as a spares car to D51 but he subsequently kept the car complete as it performed so well on hill climbs with the 4.2 ratio rear axle. SSU 183 is a known car to the Association of Healey Owners Club and appears on their register (copy of document on file). SSU 183 would be eligible for historic racing and hill climbs and with genuine Silverstones now commanding six figure sums, she is surely a most worthy alternative. The car comes with a valid V5C, MOT to March 2013, tax exempt.
