Mercedes-Benz was evolving quickly in the late Fifties and was well on its way to becoming the foremost manufacturer of luxury and near-luxury automobiles in the world. Much of its success can be traced to the 220. Introduced in 1954 with a dual carburetor 2.2 litre single overhead camshaft inline six as the 220S, Mercedes-Benz engineers quickly improved it until the series culminated in the 220SE in 1958. With Bosch mechanical fuel injection and shorter 106 wheelbase, it became a true 100+mph luxury car. The most sought are the cabriolets like this 1965 in the later low-grille style. It is attractively finished in dark blue with beige leather upholstery, interior trim and beige carpets. The top and boot are tan cloth. It has a column-shift automatic transmission, Blaupunkt AM-FM radio, blackwall Michelin radial tires, hubcaps and trim rings. The top, boot and trunk mat are new and the brakes have recently been serviced with new friction materials. The trunk has a jack and new spare. Paint and interior have been redone at least once and are very presentable, the wood on the interior and dashboard is very pretty. The body is solid and the engine bay and engine have been redone and are very presentable. Overall this is a solid, sound, sorted and reliable driver with highly presentable cosmetics, a satisfying car that has never needed a complete restoration but has consistently had its cosmetic and mechanical needs met, a gorgeous driver-quality 1965 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabriolet.
