It was the fastest car on the road back in 1955, and one of the most expensive, so it’s no wonder that the most insatiable demand for the iconic supercar of the ‘Fifties came from the USA. Delivered new via Mercedes-Benz Distributors Inc of Los Angeles on 29th May 1955, this handsome Gullwing was distinctively liveried in DB 172 metallic dark grey with red leather upholstery. Other details included sealed beam headlights (for the US market), 1:3.25 rear axle ratio, bumpers with over-riders, windscreen washers and English language instruments. For the past decade this Gullwing has enjoyed a pampered existence in one of Italy’s foremost classic car collections, during which time it has been cosmetically restored by Luigino Tommasin’s award winning team at Quality Cars, near Padova. The owner prefers to show the car without bumpers but these are supplied, as are undertrays. Optional Rudge type wheels have been fitted (current cost in Germany: €40,000 plus VAT) which add to the visual impact, especially when in motion. The car is also accompanied by its Mercedes-Benz certificate, FIVA passport, ASI homologation and owners handbook.
Striking to behold, satisfying to drive, and always sought-after by both the organizers of the most exclusive events and fellow collectors, Gullwings are recognized the world over and ownership of a good one is an opportunity no serious motoring connoisseur should miss.
