In 1968 Porsche introduced the 911 T/R in a very limited production run made available to customers looking to race or rally their 911s. Taking advantage of the low weight of the basic “T” model, 52Kg less than the “S”, Porsche homologated it with the race and rally parts from the previous year’s experimental 911 R. The T/R could be specified with almost any combination of parts to reflect the use and budget of the customer. Just 35 examples were built and only 3 of them right hand drive.
Chassis 11820884, a right drive T/R, was ordered by Paddy McNally and Charlie Lucas via AFN in November 1967 with the 911S Rallye-kit engine, rollcage, limited slip diff, rollbar and 100 litre fuel tank. As soon as they received the car in July ’68 Chris Maltin stripped and rebuilt the engine to 906 spec.
Immediately competitive McNally and Digby Martland were joint Champions in the 1968-69 Springbok series.
Sold on to Paul Vestey and then Sir Anthony Bamford 11820884 was raced by: Paul Vestey, Peter Sadler, Alain De Cadenet, Chris Craft, David Weir, Mike Ogier, John Chatham, Mike Coombe and Willy Tucket in the Classic long distance races of the period: The Targa Florio, Nurburgring 1000Kms, Le Mans 24 Hrs, Monza 1000Kms, Vila Real 6 hrs, Barcelona 12 Hrs, Mugello 500Kms, Montlhery 1000 Kms with excellent results.
A comprehensive restoration of T/R 11820884 has just been completed by Andy Prill at Maxted-Page and Prill and it is in superb ready to go condition with HTP papers. This represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a genuine and extremely rare competition 911 with great history and provenance and it is eligible for a wide variety of the best events including the Le Mans Classic, Tour Auto, Monterey Historics etc.
