It is not just the staggering performance; nor its pedigree, with its Tojeiro-designed chassis and Allan Turner‘s timeless interpretation of the barchetta body; it is the whole that continues to appeal with the Cobra. The Cobra epitomises a tradition. It harks back to the great sports cars of the 1950s - the Golden Age of sports cars - while embodying the style and optimism of the Swinging Sixties. It is also a marriage between the British and American traditions of sports cars which is appropriate since the Cobra‘s Texan creator, Carroll Shelby, achieved some of his greatest successes, including a win at Le Mans in I959, as a member of the works Aston Martin team.

Although Shelby had been selling Cobras in America since 1962 (AC sent over the bodies and chassis for the Shelby treatment) it was not until 1964 that AC reversed the flow and imported Ford V8 engines to create a parallel line of Cobras which were finished in England. AC then offered the home market the Mk. II which had revised styling, and rack and pinion steering. It was in 2005 that AC cars moved its manufacturing facility to Malta where the development and production of the AC MK.V began. Clive Sutton has been at the forefront of important specialist motorcars for over 25 years now and has built an unrivalled reputation for providing a first class, multi-faceted service which includes comprehensive after-sales care as well as a bespoke styling service. The company specialises in offering immediate or shorter delivery of new and premium cars. It was Clive Sutton that became the natural home and sole UK importer for the Mk. V. Sadly just three cars in right hand drive specification were manufactured for the UK before the factories closure in 2007. This car is one of those three.

This particular MK. V carries a Carbon Fibre body- making it extremely light. Because it is not aluminium, do not labour under any allusion that this is not an AC. The details may have changed with the times but the profile remains the same and with just over 5000 miles recorded, this is effectively a brand new car. Finished in stunning Burgundy metallic paint with white roundels and premium beige leather interior Power comes from a 5 litre V8 Ford unit developing 340bhp with sequential fuel injection. Suspension comes, as one would expect, in the form of fully independent front and rear multi link suspension. Brakes are vented discs all round fitted to Cooper Racing tyres with chromed brass wheel centres. Details such as the aluminium flush mounted Le Mans fuel filler cap and stainless steel woven front mesh over radiator aperture, polished rear wheel arch spats and brake ducts finish the car well. A thoroughly modern AC Cobra.

Since purchasing the car from Clive Sutton AC, 56 COB has had around £10,000 spent enhancing it. Modifications include a special exhaust, lowering the vehicle ride height, adjusting the ECU to produce further power, and modifying the driver and passenger seats to reduce cushion height. Described as in excellent condition throughout, with current MoT until April 2011 and a fully stamped AC service book this car is not only incredibly rare, but also represents incredible value.
