The March 701 caused a stir in 1970, as the whole project only started in October 1969 when a factory was rented, and yet 5 701''s were on the season opening grid at the South African GP. Not only this, but 3 of the star drivers of the time chose to drive the cars -Stewart, Siffert and Amon all chose this car over the established teams and manufacturers. This chassis - 701-2 was delivered to the Tyrrell Racing Organisation and driven by Jackie Stewart in the first half of the 1970 Grand Prix Season.
In its first race Jackie Stewart qualified this car on Pole position, and led the first 19 laps of the South African GP, before finishing 3rd. The next race was the race of Champions at Brands Hatch, which he duly won, and then went to the Spanish GP held at Jarama where he again qualified on the front row, before going on to win the race, leading every lap on the way.
Monaco saw this 701 on Pole position again, again leading for 26 laps until retirement with an ignition problem. Spa saw a spectacular effort from Stewart to put 701-2 on Pole again by a margin of over 2 seconds.
Never off the front row in Qualifying, always competitive in the races, winning twice in six races including the only GP victory for the 701 chassis. The history of this car is very special indeed.
From mid season onwards 701-2 became the spare car for Tyrrell, but was not raced again. The car was purchased from Tyrrell Racing Organisation in 1978 on behalf of its current owner, and it has remained in the same ownership since. The car remains in very original condition and while fitted with a period Ford DFV engine, the engine is not in running condition. The engine (Number DFV 229) was delivered to March Engineering in 1975. It was found and installed into 701-2 after the car was purchased from TRO for the current owner. With a fully documented and fantastic history this car provides a unique piece of Formula One history, and is also eligible for Historic Grand Prix Racing, including the Monaco Historic GP, as well as many other prestigious motoring events.
