Per the letter on file from Ford, this MK1 Lotus Cortina was built in January 1966, a copy of the original logbook denotes original owner as J. Hodgetts of Basildon, Essex. By 1980 it was owned by W. O’Brien also of Basildon and in 1983 it passed to D. Jackson of nearby Stanford-Le-Hope. Via Barking dealer John Skeels it was sold to G. Rawlings in 2004 and in June 2006 it left Essex ownership for the first (known) time when sold to S. Davis of Brighton. The most recent owner purchased the car in November 2009 at which point it was in need of restoration.

From early 2010 until recently the car has been subjected to a complete strip and rebuild to race specification. The shell was taken back to bare metal and whilst on a jig the doors, front wings, front panel, chassis outriggers and turret tops were all replaced with either new or ideal donor parts. The roof panel was carefully unstitched and removed before a new, MSA certified roll cage by Custom Cages was welded in. The glass windscreen was retained but all other glass was replaced with new Perspex and a front strut brace has been added to further improve rigidity.

All four corners have been rebuilt and Gaz racing shocks employed, all brakes and steering components have been stripped and replaced, re-bushed and rebuilt as required. An adjustable pedal box is fitted and all brake lines have been neatly routed through the car.

The transmission was completely uprated and rebuilt, the gearbox contains complete Quaife internals as does the differential which also includes new half shafts and a competition clutch from Burton Power was also installed. The engine was built by an experienced specialist with all new parts from Burton except for the Weber 45 DCOE 9 carburetors that were sourced independently. The engine also features a high pressure oil pump, supplementary oil cooler and all cooling hoses are Samco silicone items.

In terms of safety a long-range, foam filled, aluminium fuel cell was sourced from Alloy Racing Fabrications and an electronic Lifeline ZERO 2000 fire system has been neatly installed. Aside from this the only other additions to the bare interior are the Corbeau Pro Series race seat and TRS belts.

Beautifully presented, this Lotus Cortina racer has not yet been shaken down but has had the geometry set up and when taken on the rolling road it produced a healthy 141 bhp at 6,850 rpm at the rear wheels. Any inspection welcome, it is offered with a UK V5.
