So enamored of the car was the American public, that when the first Thunderbird rolled off the Dearborn assembly line October 22, 1954, more than 4,000 orders were waiting to be filled. The new Thunderbirds marked the first challenge to Corvettes in two years and the success of the new car proved the new Ford to be quite a formidable competitor. This 1956 Ford Thunderbird was formerly part of a California-based private collection, and displays a sympathetic older restoration while preserving its original character. Finished in correct black paint, the car s exterior is complemented by plenty of brightwork, rear fender skirts, back-up lights and a Continental spare tire kit, as well as smooth wheel covers and period-style wide whitewall tires. The paintwork has aged over the years and displays blemishes in some areas, but overall a great car to do local shows or use as a weekend cruiser. Mechanically the car is running and driving excellent. The sporting two-tone interior is in excellent shape with options including power windows, a Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission, power steering, Custom Autosounds radio, heater, tachometer and a clock.
