Realizing the effect of successful competition upon sales MG in 1950 created a special TD for racing in the UK. Its specs were soon incorporated in an improved MG TD Mark II: shaved cylinder head with 8.6:1 compression ratio, 3mm larger intake and exhaust valves, stronger valve springs, 1 1/2 inch SU carbs on a larger intake manifold and bigger air filter, two fuel pumps, manual ignition advance, higher 4.875:1 rear axle ratio and dual hydraulic and friction shocks. Horsepower in factory tune increased from 54 to something like 60, presaging the engine fitted to the later TF 1250. Most of the TD Mark IIs were exported to the U.S. where the extra power was appreciated, if not essential. Collectors rarely appreciate the performance conferred by six horsepower (or more with assiduous tuning and attention to details) but it amounts to over 10% with no increase in weight, making the MG TD Mark II the fastest and most desirable of all MG TDs. This 1951 MG TD Mark II has been restored to showroom condition in red with maroon leather upholstery and a black cloth top. The steel wheels with hubcaps that were standard on the TD mount blackwall tires and it has Lucas tribar headlights, a luggage rack, wind wings and chrome radiator slats. The paint, body, leather, top and carpets are all in good older restored condition with some miles and use but also careful attention to cosmetic maintenance. The engine compartment is orderly and tidy. It is ready to be used and enjoyed, capable of showing its heels to TCs and earlier TDs and holding its own with later MG TFs while still embodying the classic erect MG style.
