1959 was to all intents and purposes the last year for DeSoto as an independent marque. More importantly, it was the final year for convertible Desoto s. Featuring Virgil Exner s dramatic styling with aggressive tapered profile, tall fins above a set of six taillights and sweeping side moldings, power came from a 295hp 361 cubic inch Wedge V-8 in the Firesweep model, augmented by dual exhausts standard on convertibles. Bumpers were large and complex; interiors were fully equipped and comfortable. This example is particularly impressive and appears to be completely original other than a single repaint and top replacement. The chrome still sparkles and the body is straight. Underhood its presentation and appearance is consistent with the rest of the car, clean, sharp and unrestored. It has an automatic transmission, power steering, wide bias ply whitewall tires, hubcaps, radio, dual rear antennas and a blue vinyl power top with matching boot cover. Some parts of the interior have been replaced but overall it presents the appearance of a good, sound, well-maintained five or six year old car. It evidences its long history with a single owner where it obviously was loved and treated to sympathetic, continuous care as needed. Pieces like this are rarely found, even less rarely in such a rare model as the 1959 DeSoto Firesweep convertible, one of only 596 built in this last year of DeSotos convertible body style. Its odometer shows just 98,900 miles which may very well be its actual miles from new, it is that sharp and well preserved.
