Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith, regal transport

Majestic, regal, dignified and built with unparalleled perfection in mind, right down to the tiniest details. This is what characterises a Rolls-Royce. This marque represents everything that might make life more pleasant and comfortable. The same applies to this Silver Wraith, the first post-war production model.

During the post-war period, Rolls-Royce still manufactured rolling chassis that were fitted with bodywork made by coachwork-makers according to client specifications. The Silver Wraith was one of the last Rolls-Royce that could, as a result of this method, be fitted with various styles of coachwork.

With its 1949 vintage, this Silver Wraith belonged to the first series that was fitted with the quiet-as-a-whisper 4.2 litre six-cylinder inline engine. This isn’t a fast car, but is instead a phenomenal ‘calming influence’ that suggests idyllic picnics and slow sightseeing trips. Wherever it goes, bystanders will ensure a regal reception. Guaranteed.

Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith with Hooper body – 1949 in detail

This Rolls-Royce, more than sixty years of age, has stood the proverbial test of time. It has proved that a Rolls-Royce has a virtually limitless lifespan if treated well. Case in point is this specimen, which was delivered to Frederick Nield in 1949 by coachwork-maker Hooper. Later, the car was exported to the United States, where it came into the possession of Gloria Swanson in 1970. Noble House purchased the Rolls-Royce from her, and we fitted it with its Dutch registration plates.
This Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith has the simple, but meaningful (to the experts) chassis number of WDC 24.

This means that it’s a so-called Touring Limousine with design number 8034A. Only three of these were ever built! What’s even better is that this car is virtually in its original condition. It was never fully restored and is still virtually rust-free. We also believe that it was never involved in an accident. Its odometer indicates a paltry 61,312 miles.

Something very poignant is the patina that pervades the interior as well as the exterior – a vital ingredient if a classic is going to be experienced as a car from bygone days. This magnificent, stylish and authentic Rolls-Royce is what we call a dream classic. In any case, this model must have pleased Frederick Nield, or he wouldn’t have bought six of them!
