A very nice and largely original matching numbers example that has covered only 40,000 miles in the hands of five owners with a great history from new.
MLE 1D was supplied new on the 18th January 1966 by Jaguar dealer, H A Fox in Richmond, Surrey, to a local resident Mr John Wilson. He used the car sparingly and maintained it correctly as indicated by the service invoices on file from new until 1977, at which point the car had covered 36,000 miles. Mr Wilson retained the car until 1983 when it was transferred into his wife’s name - she retained the Jaguar until 1997.
Mr and Mrs Wilson looked after the car extremely carefully as it was in astonishingly good original order when it emerged from storage in 1997. At this point the car had still only covered 36,500 miles. The new owner had a full inspection carried out and a recommisioning service (an invoice for this work is on file). No major work was required, just the usual replacement of items commensurate with a vehicle that has spent some time out of use. This owner enjoyed the car for three years and covered less than 1,000 miles - MOT certificates on file indicate the mileage rising from 36,500 to 37,350 during this period.
Two remaining private owners have continued to enjoy the car since then, each has used it sparingly, the mileage rising to just 40,000 in the last twelve years. It has been very well and regularly maintained whilst clearly being very carefully used and stored. In 2010 a major service included engine removal and new clutch with refinishing of the engine compartment, Kenlowe fan, fitment of Rob Beere adjustable shock absorbers and anti roll bar, along with a check and fretting of all mechanical aspects.
This really is exactly how you want an E Type to be - it just feels ‘right’ in all respects, from the very good panel fit to the wonderful original interior to the good and correct under bonnet appearance, all things it is hard to get right. The car is very accomplished on the road having been well sorted, and as usual has a fluency that original cars so often have - it even smells right!
The car comes with a great history file that documents the car from new and it retains its original registration number, MLE 1D.
