Glamorous successor to the 300SL Gullwing which it replaced, the roadster made its debut in 1957 and became an instant favourite of the Hollywood jet set, remaining in production until 1963. Together with BMW’s 507 roadster it is Germany’s greatest post-war convertible sports car. Most sought-after among collectors today are either the first examples or the last. This early 300SL roadster was delivered on 11th December 1957 via Studebaker Packard of South Bend, Indiana (US distributor for Mercedes-Benz from 1957-1964), finished in DB 166 ‘grey blue’ with red leather upholstery (code 1079). The car featured a light grey soft top, Becker Mexico radio, English language instruments, 1:3.89 rear axle ratio and a second reversing light.
Offered now from the long-term ownership of one of Italy’s premier collectors, the car has undergone mechanical work by Mercedes-Benz Classic in Germany who also provided a factory certificate. A FIVA passport, ASI homologation and owners handbook are also supplied. The car is Italian (EU) registered and your ideal companion for grand touring this summer.
