Le succès de la Fiat 500, à une époque ou fleurissaient les carrossier indépendants en Italie, n avait pas manqué de stimuler leur imagination. On vit donc apparaître de nombreuses évolutions de ces micro-cars, dont les célèbres voitures de plage. En particulier la Jolly de Giha.Initialement appelée la Spiagetta, la plagette , cette charmante 500 à la mécanique standard, dépourvue de toit et de portes et dotée d un pare-brise raccourci fut rapidement rebaptisée, Jolly, un nom signifiant Joker en Italien, mais dont la consonance internationale était bien plus proche de sa cible commerciale.La production de ces modèles bien plus chers que des Fiat 500 ordinaires demeura néanmoins confidentielle, même si certains firent la une des magazine people de l époque. On vit à son volant Aristote Onassis ou Yul Brynner, ces voitures servant pour l essentiel à de mico-déplacements, d où généralement leur très bon état de conservation.Le modèle présenté ici est parfaitement original et date de 1959. Il s agit d une première série reconnaissable à son pare-brise coupé et à ses sièges canés.
During the early times of the Fiat 500, there was plenty of conversions being made by number of independant coachbuilders. One such specialist was Ghia, who created this conversion on Fiat s 500, but also other platforms.
Known at home as La Spiaggina , something like beach-ette , the Fiat beach-buggy was marketed worldwide as the Jolly, meaning joker in Italian, but also meaning something light, fun, funny and pretty in several languages.
The car was quite expensive and was bought by the rich and famous (Aristotle Onassis, Yul Brynner) as yacht tenders, golf carts and estate runabouts. As a result, most surviving examples have covered low mileages only.
They were sold in the USA between 1958 and 1961.
The cars specification included cut-down sides and windshield, a striped and fringed surrey top, and chromed body-pipework. Mechanicals were standard Fiat.
The present one is in excellent condition. One of the first Serie (1959), with the cutted windshield and caned seats
