| Year : 1996 Make : Bentley Model : Continental R Jack Barclay Special Coachbuilder : Mulliner/Park Ward Body Type : Coupe Colour : Peacock Blue Trim : Magnolia Leather Piped Blue History : Project 90 was unveiled by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd at the Geneva Motor Show in 1985 to wide acclaim. It was a full size fibre glass mock-up of a future Bentley coupe, code named “Nepal.” Six years later at the same Geneva Motor Show the Bentley Continental R was unveiled to rapturous applause. It was described as the “first new Bentley since 1952” which of course is inaccurate. However it was the first Bentley not to share body styling with a Rolls-Royce for many decades. The Continental R had two things in common with its long lost cousin the R Type Continental, those being that the sleek coachwork styled by Mulliner/Park Ward was also designed in a wind tunnel and that it shared the same size 16 inch wheels, and was the first model to do so since the 1950’s. Its stylish lines were an immediate hit and although it was a new concept in appearance, the Continental R had some reassuringly familiar facets. The Bentley Turbo R’s 6.75 litre engine was fitted and the seating arrangement and dashboard layout were also very similar. The outstanding performance, elegant looks and excellent luggage capacity resulted in a Bentley that was very worthy of being named a Continental. In 1996 the managerial team at Jack Barclay Ltd in London decided to give the current Bentley model a facelift, adding new features cosmetically speaking that were so well received, that they became standard fittings on later models produced at the factory. Ten standard cars were taken from the production line in Crewe and enhanced with flared wheel arches to give the car greater definition. The vertical radiator veins were removed and replaced with a mesh grill. The exhaust was modified with a large tail pipe. The bumpers were enlarged and given mesh vent finishers with five spoke sports alloy wheels completed the external cosmetic upgrades. The interior woodwork was upgraded and the normal front seats were replaced with Azure style sports seats with ruched leather to the centre panels enhancing what was already an outstanding Bentley interior. This particular car has excellent mechanical history, has travelled 65,000 miles from new and has been serviced and maintained on a no expense spared basis. It is also a car Frank Dale & Stepsons have supplied on more than one occasion in the past, so we are very familiar with its quality. Finished in arguably the most widely accepted colour combination for a modern Bentley in Peacock blue with magnolia leather piped blue, this handsome example may well become a collector’s item in year to come. Condition : Very good condition with excellent history. Technical Data : Four speed automatic gearbox, power steering, 8 cylinder 90 degree V-configuration engine, 6.7 litres displacement, 6750cc capacity. Ventilated disc brakes.
