Bonhams 'Les Grandes Marques à Monaco', 11 May 2012: Review
1971 Maserati Ghibli 4.7-Litre Coupé: Sold for 46,000 euros

Bonhams' 2012 Monaco catalogue offered 80-or-so motor car entries. While many of the feature lots failed to find new owners, those that did ranged from an 82,800 euros, 1963 Fiat 500D Jolly Beach Car to exotic classics from Ferrari and Maserati.

The cute little beach car is one of the quintessential sights of the Côte d'Azur, and was the first listed in the catalogue (the second selling for a more restrained 42,550 euros). Other entries suitable for life in the South of France included the 1981 Rolls-Royce Camargue Coupé (23,000 euros), the 1962 Facel Vega II (253,000 euros) and the 69,000 euros, 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL.

Elsewhere, though, things were not as successful as they could have been, especially considering the high quality, 200-page catalogue. Neither the 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Spider nor many of the quite appealing, 1970s rally cars sold.

1972 Ferrari Dino 246GT: Sold for 178,250 euros

1963 FIAT 500D Jolly Beach Car: Sold for 82,800 euros 1962 Facel Vega II Coupé: Sold for 253,000 euros

A car featured in on Classic Driver did: the ex-Raymond Loewy, 1972 Avanti II which achieved 40,250 euros.

And, as an indication of how highly rated these cars have become, the 1976 Ferrari 308GTB Vetroresina (glassfibre) went for a useful 54,050 euros.
