1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne wins Best of Show at 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne - 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 'Best of Show'

A 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne, owned by Los Angeles-based Peter and Merle Mullin, has been declared overall winner at Pebble Beach.

The streamlined saloon - made to aeronautical principles by French manufacturer Voisin - was in quite immaculate condition (rare for the marque, as the costs of restoring the trademark ‘dazzle pattern’ interior are usually prohibitive).

It beat off stiff competition from other entries that included Lagonda, Talbot-Lago, Alfa Romeo and Bugatti motor cars in the ‘European Classic 1938-1939’ class and then went on to overall victory.

The much-anticipated class for the Ferrari 250 GTO (celebrating its fiftieth birthday this year) brought an impressive 22 GTOs, some two thirds of overall production.

As is normally the case, though, the overall winner was a 1930s European car with extravagant bodywork.

“Winning with the Voisin is the most special, significant, rewarding thing that’s ever happened to me… outside of marrying my wife (and the Voisin’s co-owner Merle),” said Mullin, a 69-year-old financial services entrepreneur and philanthropist.

“There’s nothing like the Voisin interior. You can’t print the fabric in this car; you have to loom it. This interior is going to last a long time.”
