Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival, 29 June 2012: Review

1965 Ferrari 275GTS: Sold for £561,500

With an all-in sales figure of £22,199,098, Bonhams' 2012 Festival sale could well be the highest-grossing collectors’ car auction ever held in the UK. While the spotlight has – deservedly – gone to cars from the George Daniels Collection, there were entries all the way down the 90-lot catalogue that sold – and sold well.

You can read news of the Daniels cars and super-rare spare parts elsewhere on Classic Driver. Almost matching the Birkin Bentley in value, though, was one of the surprises of the afternoon: the ‘Corgi model’, 1912 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Double Pullman Limousine. It sold for £4,705,500 – a figure considerably in excess of the estimate serious buyers would have been informed of, should they have contacted Bonhams prior to the event.

Elsewhere, strong prices were achieved by the 1970 Aston Martin DB6 Mk2 (£404,700), the 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS Supercharged Spyder (£371,100) and the 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Coupé, a very well presented wingless example that went for a strong £113,500.

A record was set by the superb, right-hand-drive 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS. The open Ferrari, one of only 19 RHD cars ever made, beat its own auction estimate by more than £180,000, going for a very strong £561,500. That’s 275 GTB money (or was, probably, even as I write this).

It was nice to see a Maserati Sebring Coupé sell above estimate, the 1963 car realising £77,660. And how about £91,100 for the 1960 Jaguar XK150SE 3.4-Litre Drophead Coupé, a figure almost matched by the £81,020, 1950 Jaguar XK120 Roadster?

Notable non-sellers included the 1929 Bentley 4½ Litre Vanden Plas-style Tourer, the ex-Ettore Bugatti, 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Special Coupé and the 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GTS. Another time, perhaps.

The Olav Glasius Lotus Collection grossed £977k on its own, the top-selling car being the 1962 Lotus-Buick V8 Type 19 'Monte Carlo' (£158,300), closely followed by the historically significant, ex-Le Mans 24 Hours, ex-works, Team Lotus, Cliff Allison/Keith Hall, 1956 Lotus Eleven Le Mans which went for £152,700.

The for-restoration, two-tone 1961 Ferrari 250GTE 2+2 sold for £79,900 – a nice project for 2012-2013 for someone.

Bonhams’ next motor car sale will be at Quail Lodge, Carmel, CA on 16 - 17 August. Early entries include a Ford GT40, a McLaren F1 GTR and the ex-N.A.R.T. and Geneva Motor Show, 1972/75 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione Spyder.

Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival auction this year will be held for the first time on a Saturday: 15 September 2012.
