Barons 20 September sale: ‘Commemorative’ Jaguar E-type leads the way

With the closing date for entries nearly upon us, Barons’ forthcoming Esher sale has as its centrepiece a superb example of one of the 50, limited-edition E-types built to mark the final production of the famous British sports car, now in its 50th year.

Despite being used only sparingly in the last 37 years, the 1974 roadster has benefited from a £34,000, back-to-metal re-spray and comprehensive mechanical overhaul by Hilton and Moss of Stansted, Essex, completed in 2010. It’s finished in the standard-to-the-Commemorative colour combination of solid black with tan hide.

In its current, fastidious ownership, ‘GPD 406N’ won ‘Best E-type’ at the Jaguar Drivers Club International E-type Day Concours at Prescott in June 2010. That same day it also won ‘Car of the Day’ and was later invited to be displayed at the Champion of Champions concours at the NEC in November 2010.

With a mere 35,000 miles on the clock, and having had a handful of owners (including arch marque enthusiast Allen Lloyd), Barons catalogues it as “quite possibly the best Commemorative E-type available”. Estimate: £140,000 - 160,000.

There are several other Jaguars in the double-header sale – ‘British Heritage + Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy’ and ‘Other Classics - Sports and Prestige’ – which will be held at the familiar Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey venue on 19 (viewing) and 20 (sale) September.

These include a 1971 E-type V12 Roadster (£35,000 to 45,000), a Jaguar V12-powered(!) 1960 MKIX (£29,000 - 34,000) and a £25,000 to 28,000, 1959 XK150 SE FHC.

Also present are a ‘barn-find’ 1952 AC 2 Litre Saloon for £4500 - 5500 (great thing to have as a project and possible historic rally car), a rare, Hooper-bodied 1959 Bentley Continental four-door Saloon (£35,000 - 45,000 and nicely presented in BRG/Tan hide) and an ex-works, press car 1954 Triumph TR2, a decent period piece for £30,000 - 34,000.

In addition to the catalogue-heading E-type, Barons has scored something of a coup by consigning a LHD 1962 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale. Now, Gooding & Company sold a similar car (albeit ex-Briggs Cunningham) in its recent Pebble Beach sale for $209,000.

And the estimate for Barons’ car? A reasonable £40,000 - 44,000, and Esher is just 30 minutes or so from Heathrow by car, rather than 10½ hours by Boeing 747.
