Moto Guzzi Café Racer: ‘Kaffeemaschine Nummer 5’

Using a down-at-heel Moto Guzzi Le Mans 4, Hamburg motorcycle customiser Axel Budde has created the fifth in his ‘Kaffeemaschine’ series, simply titled ‘Nummer 5’.

When Thomas Gruner bought the 1989 bike as a restoration project, he wasn’t quite sure how to put it back on the road. It had clearly had an accident, and further investigation proved that the engine was damaged, too.

So Budde’s expertise was brought into play. Using parts from the wrecked bike, together with many in the Kaffeemaschine workshops, the brilliant café racer you see here came back from the dead.

As usual with Kaffeemaschine projects (yes, there are Nummers 1, 2, 3 and 4), much of the work is hand-fabricated from sheet aluminium or high-quality steel tubing. The mighty 950cc V-twin now produces 83bhp and the weight has come down to 183kg.

The final look, as Budde puts it, matches his client’s personality and is “classic and elegant, toned and sharpened with a good pinch of Hot Rod.”
