The Mk VI ushered in a new age for Bentley Motors when it was introduced in 1948 as it offered to customers a body produced entirely in-house for the first time. The 'standard steel' Mk VI was a great success, and remains highly regarded among collectors today, however coachbuilders continued to offer their own creations on the Mk VI chassis and it is one of these much rarer and more elegant cars from celebrated coachbuilders Freestone and Webb that we are offering here. This particular car stands out as an exceptional example which has plainly covered a low mileage and has always been beautifully maintained.

A semi-razor-edged design, with Freestone and Webb's usual handsome proportions, B291NY was delivered new on 29th August 1952 to Eric Doyle of Hollingbourne, Kent, by the retailer The Rootes Group in Maidstone. Doyle cared for the car outstandingly well, covering a mere 60000 miles by the time he sold it in 1970, through Paddon Bros of Knightsbridge and their celebrated boss Commander Hugh Keller, to its second owner, Mr E.V.M. Whiteway from Exeter. A true Bentley enthusiast, Whiteway used the car sparingly over the course of his tenure with the car, mainly for attending Bentley Club rallies, carefully storing it during the winter months. He maintained it very thoroughly, at one point refreshing the paintwork in its original colours. Only another 6000 miles were added to B291NY's odometer during his 15 years of ownership.

The next change of owner was to John von Spreckelson from Woking in 1985, who acquired the car through marque specialist Peter Harper, entrusting the Bentley to renowned specialists Scott-Moncrieff and Michael Walker during his ownership. In December 1996, Peter Harper once again sold the car, this time to Swede Gösta Möllefors who lived at that time in Tägerwilen, Switzerland, who had Peter Harper do a mechanical overhaul of the car, receipts for which are in the history file. Eventually the Mk VI departed Switzerland to join the collection of another Swede, Bengt Stånge, this time actually residing in Sweden.

One for the true connoisseur. achbuilt Mk VI from a standard steel car are the flowing lines of the body and the more special interior, qualities that this car has in abundance. The paintwork in Garnet and Alpine Grey complement the bodywork beautifully and the quality of the interior fittings, with fine decorative wood cappings, inviting seats and charming picnic tables are testament to the coachbuilder's artistry. The underbonnet finish, the precision of the controls and instruments and responsive chassis pay tribute to the astonishing quality of the underlying Bentley chassis.
