Description

In 1963 Mercedes-Benz introduced the 230/250/280 SL Pagoda as the successor to the famous 300/190 SL Series. Designed by Paul Bracq who was appointed Head of Advanced Design at Mercedes in 1957 when he was only 24 years old. The 280SL is considered the most desirable of this series. It has a 2778cc 6-cylinder fuel-injected engine developing 170 horsepower at 5750 RPM with a top speed of 120 mph. Available as an automatic or manual, these cars were icons of the 1960's and were owned by the likes of John Lennon and Audrey Hepburn.

We are informed by the vendor that the driving experience is surprisingly modern, with a smooth automatic gearbox, the six cylinder engine responds well and emits a glorious bark under acceleration. At other times it is impressively quiet, brakes are reported to be good and that the ride is superbly comfortable at all speeds.

The bodywork of this particular Pagoda is reported to be in excellent order throughout, the original welds can still be seen to the rear arches, all panels are straight and fit with even gaps all round, the white paintwork still holds its shine well. Brightwork is superbly presented both front and back and also includes the rubbing stripes down both sides.

The fabulous dashboard mixes chrome and body colour to good effect. The seats are said to offer good support, are comfortable and show little signs of wear despite this cars age, the large steering wheel with chrome horn ring is an absolute joy.

The fuel injected engine is reported to fire up perfectly from cold and soon settles to an even tickover, on the move the car drives beautifully and all gauges report all is well at all times. For most enthusiasts the 280SL is the one to have, its brisk rather than seriously quick, this car is more about style and comfort than sporty pretension.

The quality of the engineering and its dateless good looks make these cars an excellent investment, showing 89000 miles and with an MOT until August 2015, is there a better car for a spot of continental cruising?
