Sometimes we lay hands on the most beautiful classic cars that we have known about for years. Also in the case of this beautiful 1956 Austin Healey 100/4 BN2. The previous and first Dutch owner had the car imported from the USA as a restoration project. To be more precise from Chicago Illinois. Here the car had a good life because the basis to make something beautiful of it was perfect. The Healey was complete, a matching numbers engine (Heritage Certificate is present) and an intact body. We are talking about the year 2010.

Busy with daily work, not in a hurry, looking for parts that needed to be replaced, approaching the right professionals, and above all having conversations with them that it should not be a rush job, but that it should be a perfect end result. That’s how this job started. The owner, with two right hands and excellent technical knowledge, has outsourced the work for which he himself had no possibilities, such as the overhaul of the engine and gearbox, the sheet metal and the painting, to professionals who we all happen to know because they come from the region. . “We all know each other” so to speak, and then one automatically want to make the best possible job and all knowledge and craftsmanship are deployed.

In the end, the restoration took more than five years and the end result can be called sublime. Everything has been worked on down to the last bolt and the goal to keep everything as original as possible has certainly been achieved. Photos and invoices are of course present. The owner enjoyed it for a while, until his deteriorating health unfortunately forced him to find a buyer for it. Because he didn’t want any “nagging at the door”, we were asked to take over the Healey. And of course we wanted to, because we truly can say we are a great fan of this English roadster, and especially of the 100/4. In our opinion, this is the most balanced Healey. Based of course, on the 4-cylinder engine with no less than 2660 cc. A long-stroke engine that does not need to run at high revs to deliver enormous torque to, as is usual with the BN2 version, a wonderfully shifting 4-speed gearbox with overdrive. Driving on torque, and always having enough power available, is a real pleasure. The engine, equipped with the much sought-after so-called “Le Mans package”, delivers a reliable 111 hp and only has to move 940 kg of car weight. In theory already good numbers, and in practice it quickly becomes clear that it is a great score to be able to drive in a wonderful way. The Austin Healey “listens” well to the throttle and the driver always feels to be “in control” due to the excellent seating position, and the excellent drum brakes and steering.

And then the appearance of the 100/4… In other words, how can you put such a beautiful shape on paper with a few pencil marks. The only car with similar lines is the Jaguar C-Type. Such an iconic car. But only 35 units were built, so a Healey 100/4 is more likely to end up in your garage. Very recognizable and certainly not designed as a gimmick, but clearly made to reduce air resistance, is the ability to fold down the windscreen. A plus at the time, when the car was used a lot on the circuits. Incidentally, the flowing line of the car looks even better with the windscreen down. Driving the car with that windscreen position, you feel a lot of wind in your face, but it certainly looks great. For the real purist it is a real pleasure.
The picture should always be complete for us. In this case we have known the owner for years as one of our local entrepreneurs, during the restoration we were able to supply various parts for the car, the dismantling and assembly, sorting, guiding and partly the restoration itself, was perfectly carried out by the technical owner, the engine has been overhauled by a company with great experience with classic engines, the gearbox and overdrive have been overhauled by the best specialist in the Netherlands, and sheet metal and painting work has been done at a very high level by real specialists. But most important is that they are all real car people. Real enthusiasts who are not only skilled, but also have a heart for classics. They are all people who enjoy keeping cars like this Healey on the road in the best possible way. Cars that come from the workshop of these people are always good. And an owner who has literally devoted a part of his life to give this piece of British heritage a good future is of course of great value.
After arrival of this Austin Healey 100/4 BN2 “M” we have already made a few trips and it is a great pleasure doing that. We enjoyed the drive itself of course, but also looking at the car where the very dark green British Racing Green paint shows to be a great combination with the Old English White, and the beautiful black interior. How nice is it that a modern after-market wooden copy has not been chosen, but that the original steering wheel is still mounted. Nice and big and great to hold. The original, unrestored, but in excellent condition side screens are also still present. A beautiful soft top and handy tonneau cover are of course also part of the “anti-rain package”.

In short the benefits of this Austin Healey: -A rare car: the Austin Healey 100-4 BN2 was in production for just about 11 months from late August 1955 through July 1956. It is worth mentioning that the car, in terms of condition and type, can usually count on a warm welcome when participating in events such as the famous Mille Miglia or GP Nuvolari. Let’s not make the story too long, because we could go on and on about this, only 1456 mile driven Healey. The bottom line is that if you are interested in an Austin Healey 100/4, you should definitely not skip this completely “like new” car. Real quality never denies itself, and this Healey has a lot of that.

Soms krijgen we de mooiste klassieke auto’s binnen waarvan we al jarenlang het bestaan weten. Zo ook in het geval van deze prachtige Austin Healey 100/4 BN2 van bouwjaar 1956. De vorige en eerste Nederlandse eigenaar heeft de auto als restauratieproject laten overkomen uit de USA. Om preciezer te zijn uit Chicago Illinois. Hier had de auto een goed leven gehad want de basis om er weer iets moois van de te maken was perfect. De Healey was compleet, een matching numbers motor (Heritage Certificate aanwezig) en een gave carrosserie. We spreken dan over het jaar 2010.

Druk met het dagelijkse werk, geen haast hebben, onderdelen zoeken die aan vervanging toe waren, de juiste vakmensen benaderen, en vooral gesprekken met hen voeren dat het geen haastklus moet worden, maar dat het wel een perfect eindresultaat moet worden. Daar begon deze klus mee. De eigenaar, met twee rechterhanden en uitstekende technische kennis, heeft de werkzaamheden waarvoor hijzelf geen mogelijkheden had, zoals de revisie van motor en versnellingsbak, het plaatwerk en het spuitwerk, uitbesteed aan vakmensen die wij toevallig ook allemaal kennen omdat ze hier uit de regio komen. ”Ons kent ons” zo te zeggen, en dan zet men vanzelf het beste beentje voor en wordt alle kennis en vakmanschap ingezet.

Uiteindelijk duurde de restauratie ruim vijf jaar en is het eindresultaat subliem te noemen. Werkelijk alles is tot het laatste boutje onderhanden geweest en het uitgangspunt om alles zo origineel mogelijk te houden, is dan ook zeker behaalt. Foto’s en facturen worden vanzelfsprekend bijgeleverd. Een tijdje heeft de eigenaar er dan ook volop van genoten, totdat zijn slechter wordende gezondheid hem helaas genoodzaakte er een koper voor te zoeken. Omdat hij geen “gezeur aan deur” wilde, kregen wij de vraag de Healey over te willen nemen. En natuurlijk wilden we dat graag, want we kunnen rustig zeggen dat we een fan zijn van deze Engelse roadster, en vooral van de 100/4. Dit is naar onze mening de meest uitgebalanceerde Healey met als basis natuurlijk de 4-cilinder motor met maar liefst 2660 cc. inhoud. Een lange slag motor die niet veel toeren hoeft te draaien om een enorm koppel te kunnen leveren aan, zoals bij de BN2 versie gebruikelijk, een heerlijk schakelende 4-versnellingsbak met overdrive. Het rijden op koppel, en altijd voldoende trekkracht voorhanden te hebben is een waar genot. De van het veel gezochte zogenoemde ”Le Mans pakket” voorziene motor levert een betrouwbare 111 pk en hoeft slechts 940 kg wagengewicht te verplaatsen. In theorie al mooie cijfers, en de praktijk maakt snel duidelijk dat het een prima score is om op een heerlijke manier te kunnen rijden. De Austin Healey ”luistert” goed naar het gaspedaal en de bestuurder voelt zich altijd “in control” door de prima zitpositie, de uitstekende trommelremmen en de prima besturing.

En dan het uiterlijk van de 100/4… Oftewel hoe kun je met een paar potloodstrepen zo’n prachtige vorm op papier zetten. De enige auto met vergelijkbare lijnen is de Jaguar C-Type. Ook zo’n iconische auto. Maar daar zijn er maar 35 stuks van gebouwd, dus een Healey 100/4 maakt meer kans bij u in de garage terecht te komen. Zeer herkenbaar en beslist niet als gimmick ontworpen, maar duidelijk gemaakt om de luchtweerstand te verminderen, is de mogelijkheid om de voorruit naar beneden te klappen. Een pluspunt destijds, toen de auto veel werd in gezet op de circuits. Overigens komt de vloeiende lijn van de auto dan nog beter tot zijn recht. Gewoon op de weg rijdend zit je wat in de wind, maar het ziet er wel geweldig uit. Voor de echte purist is het echt genieten.

Het plaatje moet eigenlijk altijd compleet zijn voor ons. In dit geval kenden we de eigenaar al jaren als een van onze plaatselijke ondernemers, tijdens de restauratie hebben we diverse onderdelen voor de auto mogen leveren, het de- en monteren, uitzoeken, begeleiden en deels de restauratie zelf, is perfect uitgevoerd door een technische eigenaar, de motor is gereviseerd door een bedrijf met zeer veel ervaring met klassieke motoren, de versnellingsbak en overdrive is gereviseerd door dé specialist in Nederland op dit gebied, en plaatwerk en spuitwerk is heel hoog niveau gedaan door wederom echte specialisten. Maar de gemene deler is deze is toch wel dat het allemaal echte automensen zijn. Echte liefhebbers die niet alleen kundig zijn, maar ook hart hebben voor klassiekers. Stuk voor stuk zijn het mensen die er plezier aan hebben om auto’s als deze Healey op zo goed mogelijke wijze op de weg te houden. Auto’s die uit het atelier van dit soort mensen komen zijn altijd goed. En een eigenaar die letterlijk een deel van zijn leven heeft gewijd om dit stukje Brits erfgoed een goede toekomst te geven is natuurlijk van zeer grote waarde.

Wij hebben na binnenkomst van deze Austin Healey 100/4 BN2 “M” al enkele ritjes gemaakt en het is elke keer genieten. Genieten van het rijden op zich, maar ook van het kijken naar de auto waarbij de zeer donkergroene British Racing Green lak een geweldig combinatie vormt met het Old English White, en het prachtige zwarte interieur. Hoe mooi is het dat er niet gekozen is voor een modern after-market houten exemplaar maar dat het originele stuurwiel nog steeds gemonteerd is. Lekker groot en heerlijk in de hand liggend. Ook zijn de originele, ongerestaureerde, maar in prima staat verkerende side-screens nog aanwezig. Een prachtige softtop en handige tonneaucover maken natuurlijk ook deel uit van het “anti-regenpakket”. Vermeldenswaardig is dat de auto qua uitvoering, staat en type, bij deelname aan evenementen zoals de bekende Mille Miglia of GP Nuvolari, doorgaans kan rekenen op een warm welkom.

Laten we het verhaal maar niet te lang maken, want we kunnen nog wel even doorgaan over deze, slechts 1456 mijl gereden Healey. Het komt er op neer dat mocht u geïnteresseerd zijn in een Austin Healey 100/4, u zeker deze werkelijk van onder tot boven volledig “als nieuwe” auto, niet mag overslaan. Echte kwaliteit verloochent zich nooit, en daar heeft deze Healey voldoende van in huis.
