Help, the robots are coming!

Although robots are often portrayed by sci-fi movies as futuristic and quirky protagonists, mechanical engineering has been integrated into our lives for quite some time now. A current exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum illuminates how this involvement is beginning to radically alter our lives…

From shipping drones to intelligent sensors to Industry 4.0, robots have long been part of our reality. The exhibition ‘Hello, Robot. Design between Man and Machine’, which can be seen at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein until 14 May 2017, examines the current boom in robotics with more than 150 works inspired by design, art, film, literature, and industry. The focus of the show is to highlight the different ways in which designers shape the interfaces between people and machines. At the same time, ethical, social, and political questions are also raised, because, although robots won’t be seeking human emotion and life, as the B-movies like to portray, they could take over countless jobs worldwide and radically change our societies.
