Acura NSX Concept at Detroit

Detroit has seen the launch of an innovative new supercar concept – to be badged Acura in the U.S.A. and expected to go on sale within the next three years. The car is the latest generation of the NSX, the widely admired driver’s car developed by Honda.

Honda is keen to emphasise that the NSX Concept does not rely on brute force from a large engine; rather, the supercar credentials come courtesy of its ‘extremely favourable’ power-to-weight ratio – although, disappointingly, no actual power-to-weight figure is given.

The concept car boasts a V6 engine positioned centrally in the dramatically styled body. Among the lightweight car’s new technologies is a new ‘Sport Hybrid SH-AWD’ hybrid system – also given the equally enthusiastic name of Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. This uses a pair of electric motors delivering torque to the front wheels (while the V6 powers the rear), providing tremendous off-the-line acceleration plus – one would assume – superb handling in corners.
