Our 10 favourites from the Motorclassica auction in Melbourne

Australia’s classic car season opens with the Motorclassica exhibition, where Theodore Bruce Auctions will hold a sale. We’ve selected some of the most enticing classics from the lotlist…

While Europeans are gradually preparing their classics for a winter slumber, it’s beginning to warm up in Australia – meaning the classic car season is about to begin. On 24-26 October, the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne will host Motorclassica: a classic car extravaganza that includes a concours, a car show, an opening tour and an auction. It’s an internationally respected event – in previous years, names such as Derek Bell and Valentino Balboni have made the long journey to attend as VIP guests.

The only R-Type Continental delivered to Australia

This year’s Motorclassica sale is being managed by Theodore Bruce Auctions, and it promises to be the best yet. Headlining the proceedings is a 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental fastback, the only such car to be delivered new to Australia. Chassis BC30D was also shown at the Australian Motor Show in 1955, and has had just five owners – the last of which has kept the car since 1977. It carries an estimate of 1-1.2m Australian dollars, yet there are plenty of other notable cars with more modest estimates. We select our favourites below.
