Last call for Stuttgart: Bonhams to sell ex-Madonna SL and other prominent Mercedes

This Saturday, 12 July 2014, Bonhams and Mercedes gear up for their first joint auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Among the almost 50 entries are plenty of cars with intriguing histories, such as Madonna’s former SL…

From the 600 Pullman of the former Chinese foreign minister Chen Yi, through the Mercedes-Benz 300 that once belonged to the family of Rudolph Sack, to the Mercedes 300 SL that was used by Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson as a reconnaissance car before the 1955 Mille Miglia, the Mercedes-Benz Sale in Stuttgart offers some fascinating Mercedes automobiles.

Sean Penn’s gift to Madonna under the hammer

Another example is this Mercedes-Benz 560 SL from 1987. The eight-cylinder Mercedes was a gift from the Oscar-winning actor Sean Penn to none other than pop diva Madonna Louise Ciccone. At the time, the two stars were a married couple – and Madonna, at 29 years old, was already an international star. When their marriage was annulled in 1989, Madonna retained the 560 SL, right up until 1996. The car is now, according to Bonhams, in original and excellent condition, with only 51,000 miles on the clock. The documentation accompanying this 560 SL includes photographs of Madonna in the car, along with other celebrities such as Michael Jackson and Antonio Banderas. Bonhams is expecting the car to sell for between 43,000 and 52,000 euros.
