The 2008 Ferrari Auction at Maranello

Building on a highly successful 2007 event that achieved EURO 34 million, RM Auctions has released details of early entries for this year’s sale that include an ex-factory 1960 Ferrari 246S Dino sports-racer, and two examples of one of the most desirable open Ferraris ever made: the 250GT California Spyder.

The red Cal’ Spyder is a 1958 LWB car, chassis 0923GT, while the black ex-Coburn machine is a 1961 short wheelbase (chassis 2377GT). Both cars have the desirable ‘covered headlamp’ bodywork and early estimates would indicate individual prices of between $US4,000,000 and $US6,000,000.

Another stellar entry is the Ferrari 246S Dino - chassis 0778 - from 1960. As described in Doug Nye's book Dino, this car first appeared in Buenos Aires that year for the season-opening 1000Km race. Driven by ‘Ludo’ Scarfiotti and the veteran Argentine Jose Froilan Gonzalez, the 2417.33cc V6-engined car was running fourth behind the leading Maserati ‘Birdcage’ and two sister team V12 Testa Rossas before retirement with ignition troubles after 39 laps.

The little car, more nimble and nearly as fast as a V12, was then entered in the Targa Florio (Mairesse/Scarfiotti/Cabianca finishing fourth), and the ADAC 1000Km at the Nürburgring driven by Scarlatti/Cabianca. It’s too early for estimates on this one, but you can probably reckon on a similar price to the California Spyders. What a car.

Other road machinery entered so far includes a 2003 Enzo and a simply delicious LHD 1967 275GTB/4 estimated at $US1,200,000 and $US1,600,000. The sale also features the Ferrari Francorchamps Collection, a number of pieces to be offered directly, without reserve, from Jacques Swaters, the renowned ex-Ferrari team manager and importer.

Pride of place in this section of the sale is the prototype 1980 Ferrari Pinin, which made its debut at the 1980 Turin Motor Show.

RM will be travelling to Paris for the Rétromobile exhibition and will have the LWB California Spyder and the Dino 246S on stand D10 in Hall 4.

If you are planning to attend the Maranello sale, RM can reserve hotels and help with travel arrangements, too.
