1964 Ferrari 250 LM: Dramatic Last-Minute Entry in 2008 Maranello Sale
The ex-Jochen Rindt, Austrian Grand Prix-winning Ferrari 250 LM, chassis 5845GT, will be one of the headlining entries at this weekend’s all-Ferrari sale.
With just days to go before over 40 Ferraris (and a Maserati MC12) are offered for sale by RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby’s, at Fiorano, an exciting late entry has been added to the catalogue: the car that future World Champion Jochen Rindt took to first place in his home Grand Prix in 1965.
Only 32 250 LMs were built – a fact that denied Enzo Ferrari the chance to homologate it as a GT car in long-distance racing. Ferrari’s Championship loss is the car collecting world’s gain, as the mid-engined coupé (that can just about be driven on the road) is one of the marque’s most desirable models.
It was designed to replace the immortal 250 GTO but, due to constant wrangling with the authorities over homologation, could neither challenge for outright victories against prototypes from Ferrari and Ford, nor win a GT category now dominated by Ford-engined AC Cobras and, later on, GT40s. The 250 LMs were regularly entered by iconic 1960s racing teams such as Maranello Concessionaires, North American Racing Team, Scuderia Filipinetti and Ecurie Francorchamps.
The quick and reliable cars would often do well when more fragile opposition failed. The model’s greatest success was first overall at Le Mans in 1965, a N.A.R.T. entry driven by, yes, you’ve guessed it, Jochen Rindt, partnered by the bespectacled Kansan, Masten Gregory.
The car carries an estimate of 4,200,000 - 4,800,000 euros. You can see further details HERE and read our preview of the 2008 Maranello Sale HERE.
