Lord of the auction: RM to sell James Hunt’s Hesketh 308

At this year’s Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, RM Auctions is to put Hesketh Racing’s first Formula 1 car under the hammer. Chassis number 308-1 was campaigned in the 1974 and 1975 seasons, primarily at the hands of James Hunt…

The story of Lord Hesketh and his self-financed Formula 1 team is never likely to be repeated (a story that we recently covered in depth), but valuable relics from that period of mid-70s madness still occasionally appear for sale. The latest in the tale is the factory car from 1974-75, which Hunt famously steered to victory at his home GP of Silverstone on 7 April 1974. The following year, during Hunt’s final season before his fateful move to McLaren, Alan Jones and Harald Ertl achieved three top-10 finishes in the sponsorless car.

Chassis 308-1 is to cross the block at RM’s 10 May sale at the Monaco Historic GP, carrying an estimate of €400,000 – 650,000.
