Finished in Dark Green over Black Metallic with Black Leather and a Black Mohair Convertible Hood this amazing Hot Rod is built from an all steel 1937 Ford Cabriolet with a custom built chassis specialists Pete and Jake’s in Peculiar, Missouri. The engine was an all new 383Ci Chevrolet Small Block V8 that is mated to a Turbo 350 Automatic Gearbox with a column shift. Suspension is independent with shock absorbers up front with a solid Ford 9 inch axle at the rear. The steering rack is from a Ford Mustang II and is mated to a GM Tilt column. Brakes are 11 inch discs at all four corners with bespoke 4-Pot callipers powered by a Chevrolet Corvette duel master cylinder.

The body and chassis have been superbly engineered, prepared and painted in the USA prior to being imported by its only UK owner in 2006. The body has been painted in a very dark green metallic over black metallic and finished with hand painted graphics on the body line and metal interior dash. As you can see from the pictures the shell has removable side panels so the car can be driven and shown with the amazing engine bay on display. The running boards are painted metallic black to match the body and the rear light cluster has been ‘frenched in’ with LED lamps. The ’37 has a split front windscreen and a glass oval rear screen in the excellent mohair convertible roof. There is little chrome on the exterior with the grill being body coloured but there are some pretty chrome wing mirrors and electric windscreen wipers, with the motor hidden under the bulkhead as in a modern vehicle. The 37 is stunning and stops traffic where ever it is driven.

The 37 sports a set of five spoke Billet Specialities alloy wheels, finished in chrome with excellent Dunlop rubber all round. The tyre sizes are 215/40 R17 at the front and 245/45 R18 at the rear. The car has a bespoke braking system using 11″ discs at all four corners with bespoke 4-Pot callipers powered by a Chevrolet Corvette duel master cylinder. These give inspired braking and coupled with the rubber gives it prodigious grip and braking performance. One aspect that was lacking on Henry Fords original design!

The engine is a small block Chevrolet V8 which is mildly tuned to produce just short of 300 BHP at the rear wheels. What it does have is massive torque (over 500 foot pounds at 1500 RPM) which propels the light chassis and body up the road at an amazing rate! The engine is very smooth and coupled to the Turbo 350 automatic gearbox makes for a relaxed drive when you want to be seen and serious progress when you want to hitch up her petty coat! Both units were new during the build and have covered negligible miles since. The engine bay is beautifully detailed with chrome A/C pump, alternator and starter motor, pin striped rocker covers and air filter housing, billet aluminium, dip stick housing and braided hoses for the fuel. The engine breaths through a good old down draft Holley and the electric ignition is by MSD.

As in every other area of this impressive hot rod the interior is totally bespoke and done in the best possible taste. The black leather and suade bench seat is very comfortable with a fold down centre arm rest and can be easily adjusted for the driver. There is a 3 spoke chrome and leather steering wheel adorning the top of the GM tilt steering column. The stalks and gear selector are turned from billet aluminium and have a beautiful finish. The dash is metal with VDO white dials including Speedometer, Rev Clock, Water Temperature, Fuel, Oil Pressure and Volt Meter. There is a hidden panel which controls the electric windows, air conditioning and heater controls. There is a single CD/Radio fitted with 4 speakers hidden in the front footwells and behind the seats.

Sadly the great British summer has curtailed our enjoyment of the 37 to a short run through the countryside, but what an amazing experience it was! The first thing you note is the high and commanding view of the road you get swiftly followed by how easy it is to drive. The steering is light when manoeuvring and well waited when you get underway, suspension compliant, but the biggest memory you will have is the wave of torque that propels you down the road. The noise of the V8 playing through the stainless steel exhaust system is also something to behold! This is a stunning work of art that you could look at for hours and, on those perfect days, get out and really enjoy owning. This is a Hot Rod for grown ups and a tonic for all the things in your life that aren’t quite as perfect.

This 37 Convertible was built in the beating heart of America’s Motor City, Detroit. It was brought to the UK by its only British owner in April 2006 and delivered straight to well known Hot Rod specialist Tim Hammond Engineering in Suffolk to get ready for the UK roads. He spent a total of 161 hours getting the car prepared and through the ‘modified Vehicle Inspection’ so the car could be road registered. Since 2006 she has been very lightly used and the MOT’s and SORN documents show the mileage to be true from when the car was brought into the UK. There are invoices and copies of all of the import documents in the history file with the current MOT that runs to May 23rd 2013. Included is a CD of the build photographs shown in the gallery below.
