Derham Body Co. in Rosemont, Pennsylvania has a remarkable history. Founded in 1907 at the dawn of the automobile age, it built high quality custom coachwork to meet the needs of discerning clients and manufacturers agents in the Northeast including the famed Derham Tourster that was one of the hits of the 1931 New York Auto Salon. Derham survived the Twenties by building bodies in series to lower costs then adapting them to various chassis in response to ever more scarce orders. A DeSoto-Plymouth dealership also helped keep the coachworks going. It resumed custom coachbuilding on a small scale after WWII. In 1962 it built two prototype coupes on the Lincoln Continental chassis, resuming an association with Lincoln that had begun in 1930 with work for Edsel Ford. This is one of those two unique Continentals. The wheelbase of the original 4-door Continental has been drastically shortened by over two feet to just 98 inches, 4 inches shorter than a 1962 Corvette, with a compact 2-seat vinyl-covered greenhouse skillfully blended with the Continental s distinctive lives. It has been appropriately carefully preserved over the last half century and now shows 57,000 probably original miles on its odometer. The exterior has been repainted to high standards once in gold. The black leather interior is original except for a re-covered cushion on the bench-style seat. It is as lavishly equipped as expected for a Continental including power windows and woodgrain accents on the dashboard and doors. Other details including the instrument panel and steering wheel are good as well. A set of unusual and probably original wire wheel covers and whitewall tires set off the exterior s gold paint and black vinyl roof. It has never felt the touch of a restorer, remaining in really nice, attractive, solid and straight largely original condition. It is visually distinctive but more importantly it is one of the last examples of American custom coachwork, built to the high standards of the Derham Body Co. Had the project been green-lighted by Lincoln it could have created a whole new category of premium personal cars in the spirit of Edsel Ford s original Continental.
