| The E36 AMG was Mercedes answer to the BMW M5. With AMG branding it was the first recognizably sporty version of the E-class and the first to be offered in RHD form. AMG enlarged the standard 3.2 litre engine to 3.6 litres and with hotter camshafts the result was an impressive 268bhp and 284lb/ft of torque, both figures some 20% up on standard spec. Springs and dampers were also firmer and AMG opted for the proven 4-speed auto instead of the standard ‘electronically regulated’ 5-speed. This car was an astonishing £54,450 new in 1995 and this price along with the specialst nature of AMG tuned cars meant that only 14 examples of the cabriolet were ever imported into the UK. Smooth and quiet at normal revs, the 3.6 litre unit takes on a much more gruff tone when the throttle is squeezed and revs shoot up as the auto lurches down a ratio under kickdown, then you are pinned to the back of your seat until it decides to change up again. All of this goes hand-in-hand with the famous build quality of the W124, the fabulous cabin with well-shaped seats and perfect driving position, switchgear and furnishings all so beautifully made. This is an opportunity to purchase one of the rarest and greatest Q cars of the 1990s. As understated as it is potent, it is a delight to drive any time of year but especially appealing for the coming late summer evenings.
