The Virage Volante offered here features the popular 'wide body' specification that originated on the 6.3-litre version of the Virage, which was announced by Aston Martin as an interim model ahead of the company's forthcoming twin-supercharged Vantage. Offered by Aston Martin's Service Department as a conversion for the existing 5,340cc V8-engined Virage, this package was introduced in January 1992. The '6.3' conversion increased power by around 40 percent while incorporating improvements to both suspension and brakes - now featuring ABS for the first time - and could be ordered new or retro-fitted to customers' existing cars. These 6.3-litre cars (and the later Vantage) were readily distinguishable by their flared wheelarches, necessary to accommodate the package's wider wheels and tyres, a feature that gave raise to the term 'wide body'. Customers with no need for the 6.3's improved performance but who nevertheless appreciated the aggressive looks of the 'wide body', could order the package's cosmetic items in isolation. Aston Martin themselves recognised this demand, building several Volantes to 'cosmetic wide body' specification, the automatic transmission example offered here being one such.
This car was supplied new in July 1996 by Grange Aston (Welwyn) Limited of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire and first owned by British Teleflower Service of Romsey, Hampshire. Its original registration was 'A7 TON'. The car comes with its original service booklet (water-damaged and replaced by Aston Martin in 2006) recording regular servicing by AMWS and main dealers up to January 2005 at 19,460 miles; though with such sparing use (high days and holidays only) there have been periods when the vehicle was not being driven and therefore did not receive a calendar scheduled service. The last undertaken was a comprehensive 37,500-mile service even though the mileage at that time was only 27,949 (currently 28,060). This particular service is not recorded in the replacement booklet but we understand that AMWS has agreed to fill in the missing stamp, which should have been done prior to sale. Finished in Buckingham Green with green-piped ivory leather interior, the car is described by the vendor as in generally good condition and offered with the aforementioned service history, current MoT/tax and Swansea V5 document.
