| French title• Regularly maintained car• Successful model, that helped Aston Martin to recover• Rare Volante version, a treat to drive1998 Aston Martin DB7 Volante cabrioletFord’s arrival at Aston Martin in 1987 helped save the marque from impending decline. After the Virage, Aston Martin committed itself to a new direction, stylistically and mechanically, and the DB7, launched in 1993, drew inspiration from Aston models of the 1950s and 60s. This involved a return to a straight-six engine, on a platform taken from the Jaguar XK8. The styling, designed by Ian Callum, incorporated key features of the old Astons, such as the radiator grille, into a graceful and classically elegant design. Finally, it re-adopted the ‘DB’ initals of David Brown, from the cars that had made the marque a success. Producing 335 bhp, the 3.2-litre engine powered this stunning car to 260 km/h. It was enormously successful and allowed Aston Martin to regain the composure it had lost. The model enjoyed various improvements in 1996, such as new seats and more powerful brakes.The Volante version, of interest to us here, was introduced at the Detroit Motor Show in 1996. Rarer than the coupé (894 examples against 1,567 coupés, in six cylinder version), it also had the added feature of offering different driving styles. It offers a relaxed drive, with the hood down, and has a much sportier feel, like the coupé, with the hood up, thanks to the integrity of its construction.The car offered is liveried in grey and has leather upholstery in light grey with blue piping, and navy blue carpet. It is right-hand drive, with automatic gearbox and CD loader in the boot. The odometer reads 77,000 miles, corresponding to 124,000 km. Coming with service manual and original tool kit, the car has been regularly serviced, which is clear from its fine presentation and the way it drives.
