Following the success of the first Clio V6, Renault sent 12 early production shells and V-6 engines to Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), who built all the Phase 1 cars for the French manufacturer in Sweden. These shells formed the foundation for the Phase 2 Clio V6, with TWR completing and road registering these Development Cars in 2002 for testing. Production returned to France, specifically the Renault Sport plant in Dieppe, for Phase 2 cars. At launch, the Phase 2 Clio V6 was the fastest production hot hatchback and was later ranked by Jeremy Clarkson as one of his top 10 cars of all time.
The vendor purchased chassis number ‘7’ in 2008; they are just the second owner after TWR. It has been dry stored ever since. The Clio arrived on a pallet as it was incomplete at that time, with the vendor sourcing among other things the missing wheels and an interior before returning this Development Car to the road in 2012. It had covered nearly 11,000 kilometres by this point. Upon contacting the Renault Club, it was discovered that this is one of the 12 reported cars built by TWR. Following an inspection, the Club provided a detailed report confirming that this is indeed a Development Car.
Expertly maintained by the consignor, an automotive engineer, chassis number ‘7’ has covered just 32,145 kilometres at the time of cataloguing and is accompanied by a file detailing all the maintenance and history.
