FOR SALE; RANGE ROVER SERIES 1 // EARLY SUFFIX A // FAMILY OWNED FROM NEW // COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY

EQUIPMENT
Davos White, 4- Speed Manual & Transfer Box, 16″ Steel Wheels, Heated Rear Window, Rear Wiper & Washer, Immobiliser, Oil Pressure Gauge, Fire Extinguisher

EXTERIOR
Finished in its factory colour of Davos White, the boxy exterior of this legendary series 1 Range Rover presents remarkably well. The car was taken off the road by its first owner in 1986 and was subject to an extensive 10 year restoration, which included being stripped down to the chassis in 1990. It was then shot-blasted and zinc-sprayed which would explain why the chassis and bodywork still sit in such solid condition, 30 years after the work was initially done.

The tailgate is the only panel which was replaced in this process, which is very surprising considering the hard working lives most Series 1’s endured. Exterior trim is all in fine order, with the bumpers and C-pillar air vents both straight and rust free and the light lenses free from any cracks or fogging.

INTERIOR
The interior sits in good condition, with a invoice showing a nearly £1,200 re-trim in 1996, it was finished to a very high standard in a hard wearing cloth rather than the standard Palomino PVC. The quality of the work is evident as the seats have really stood the test of time, still free from any sagging or unsightly stains whilst the dashboard has avoided the usual cracks and fading that befalls most Series 1’s. As part of the re-trim, front and rear inertia seat belts were also fitted to give the driver and occupants some extra peace of mind.

The arrangement is typical Land Rover, the space is large but fairly sparse. The long gear stick, and a large original steering wheel protrude into the cabin and make the Series 1 a very heavy, driver focused experience. This example does come with a couple of options, such as the heated rear window and rear windscreen wiper/washer system.

Mounted upon the large central tunnel is a brass plaque to commemorate the restoration of this range rover by its original owner, a lovely addition considering the car has remained in the family 26 years after the restoration was complete.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Maintenance of the 3.5L V8 has been thorough to say the least, with service stamps in the original 1972 Rover service book, a comprehensive file of invoices during its 10 year restoration and the a replacement service book from Rover which documents servicing between 2001 – 2006. Invoices outlining thousands of pounds were spent with Lakeland Land Rover over the years really show that mechanically this car wanted for nothing.

The car went into storage in 2008 where it remained until 2018, at which point it was inspected by Land Rover before being re-commissioned where it was subject to various mechanical work including a new alternator, refurbished manifold and new clutch.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 16″ steel wheels are in keeping with the whole philosophy of the brand at that time; simple, functional & effective. They present well, with no clear marks or dents and really tie in the rugged, retro aesthetic of the Range Rover.

Premium Michelin Latitude off-road tyres provide exceptional traction in all conditions. With plenty of tread and no signs of cracking they have many miles left in them.

Brakes are also in fine order, with the master cylinder and seals receiving some attention when the car came of of storage in 2018.

HISTORY FILE
The original purchase invoice is still in the history and confirms the ownership and that it as an extremely rare Suffix-A example, that was delivered on 25/05/1972 by Harvey Hudson in Woodford, London. The cost of the Range Rover at new was £2339.72, which included £16.00 for the optional Heated Rear Window.

The car remained with this owner throughout its life, including for its restoration between 1986-1996 and period in storage, 2008-2018. The owner sadly passed away and the car was then registered in his daughters name in 2018, when it was taken out of storage to be mechanically re-commissioned. Mileage and history are verified through an enormous log of service stamps, invoices and MOT certificates dating back as far an 1972 which outline seemingly every part/service the car has ever received.

The car also has its original service book, letters of correspondence with Land Rover to discuss production shortages and a factory visit, the full original repair manual, owners manual and spare keys. The history of this rare Suffix-A car is truly remarkable, and on Range Rover’s 50th anniversary it only seems fitting that this fine example finds a new owner to continue its incredible story.
