Affectionately known as the “Tin Snail” by legions of French automobile owners, Citroën’s elegantly simple 2CV offered durable, versatile, and low-cost motoring during the postwar decades, much the same as Germany’s Volkswagen Beetle did. Featuring a minimalistic body, seating for up to four adults, and an economical, easily serviced air-cooled engine and front-wheel drivetrain, the 2CV delivered a remarkably soft and comfortable ride while being rugged enough for limited off-road use. These virtues and the near indestructibility of the 2CV have ensured its enshrinement on many “Greatest Cars” lists. When the last 2CV rolled off the Mangualde, Portugal production line at 4:00 PM on July 27, 1990, 42 years after its launch, an amazing 5,114,969 examples had been built.

This Citroën 2CV6 Special carries fascinating provenance, having been registered by Citroën UK and leased by the company’s public relations manager, then working from the Slough, UK headquarters. In 1988, he purchased the car and last used it in January 1989, followed by long-term dry storage on blocks until 2005, when it was recommissioned that March, before acquisition by another owner in the UK and, finally, the Mullin Collection in 2016. In addition to copies of Citroën UK staff lease paperwork from the 1980s, this wonderfully preserved 1986 Citroën 2CV6 Special comes with the original Citroën service booklet listing original purchase data, plus technical information, prior UK ownership records, and correspondence.
